Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary is being celebrated on 31 October. This day is celebrated as National Unity Day in India. They are also called Iron Man. Sardar Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister of independent India. Sardar Patel made an unprecedented contribution in making India independent. After which Sardar Patel was seen as the first Prime Minister of the country in India, which became independent from the subjugation of the British.

Almost everyone in the Congress wanted Sardar Patel to become the Prime Minister, but at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi, he withdrew his name from the race to become the Prime Minister. This iron man had warned the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in advance about the relationship between India and China.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31 October in Kheda district of the then Bombay Presidency (present-day Gujarat). He belonged to a farming family. Although the boy from a simple peasant family became distinguished in the foreseeable future by his labor and courage.

Sardar Patel fought lifelong battles against social evils like alcoholism, untouchability and atrocities on women. Tried hard to maintain Hindu-Muslim unity. He was also imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle, but the British government had to bow down every time in front of Patel’s wisdom and efficiency.

When India became independent, preparations started for the formation of a new Nizam in the country. Since at that time the Congress was considered appropriate to determine the policies of the country. Therefore, the eyes of all Indians were fixed on the name of the new Congress President. It was expected that the new President of Congress would be the first Prime Minister of the country.

Due to the immense popularity of Iron Man, the Congress Committee did not propose the name of Pandit Nehru and Patel became the President of the party with an absolute majority. Because of the fear that MGR should not break the Congress, Bapu asked Sardar Patel to withdraw from these races. The Iron Man knew that he could become the Prime Minister of India, but he heeded Bapu’s words and withdrew his nomination immediately.

But Patel assumed an important responsibility in independent India. He was made the first Deputy Prime Minister of the country. The effect of this post was similar to that of the Home Minister. Apart from this, he was entrusted with many important responsibilities. The biggest challenge among these was the merger of the princely states with India. It was not an easy task to bring all the princely states and princely states under the circle of the Government of India. But without any fight, Sardar Patel got 562 princely states merged into the Union of India.
